The Photography Club

With a membership of fourteen students, this club is small in comparison to others. It seems, however, that, uncrowded, the creativity of the members has blossomed, creating a windfall of new ideas, thus making the club a viable entity. Under the supervision of faculty liason, Mr. Brathwaite, the club has, over the past year, cultivated its skills, bringing them to fruition. Elections in the first term provided the club with a new president (James Walker), secretary (Keisha Smith), and treasurer (Andrew Tyrell). Not slowed by a change in leadership, an exhibition was mounted for the 1997 Speech Day. In order to do this, a night 'shoot', focussing on the lighting of the city, and a 'shoot' to the north of the island were scheduled. In addition to cementing the camera techniques club members had learnt such as flash photography, the shoots helped to foster an appreciation for the Barbadian environment and the many colours of the island's people. They, of course, could only try to get all that on film!

The club is not only about fieldwork. A workshop featuring Mr. Ronnie Carrington, a professional photographer, was held in the Trinity Term. This workshop gave club members first hand knowledge of professional photography and allowed them to realize that there are avenues open for any serious amateur who wishes to make a living from his craft. All he needs is creativity and a style of his own.

The club has maintained a commitment to being supportive of Harrison College's sport's events. Members were seen poolside at swimming sports, getting an eyeful (whether or not they were taking photographs) and more recently, at the Guard of Honour during the school's Rememberance Day Service.

There are hopes for this club at Kolij. A working liaison with the Louis Lynch Photography Club is in the works, and we hope that it will be beneficial for both clubs in the long run.

We, the authors would like to clarify a seeming paradox. Every club other than the Photography Club has a picture of its members. The members of this club prefer to be "behind the scenes" and have not submitted any photos of club members. It is noteworthy to point out that all the sporting events photos and most of the other clubs' photos were submitted by the Photography Club.
