Over the years Harrison College has produced several prominent individuals who have made great contributions to Barbadian society. These individuals include Governors General, Prime Ministers, many outstanding businesspersons, several noteworthy musicians and a few world class sportspersons. Unfortunately, there is a large number of famous graduates who have earned a right to be mentioned in these pages but a limited amount of space. The process of deciding who would be among the first graduates to receive honourable mention was difficult. However, we have chosen four people who should be known to all Barbadians. Two of them were very important in the political development of Barbados and the other two are sportspersons who have made an impact on the world scene as professional athletes. For a more in-depth profile of their life, contribution to society and achievements, please clink on the appropiate name. Before you proceed however, we suggest that you read further along this page to see some of our celebrated graduates and their areas of expertise.
It is a little known fact that all of the native Governors-General of Barbados, save the late Dame Nita Barrow, and all the Prime Ministers were Harrisonians. This has led to charges of elitism. Despite Harrison College's past as a school which had discriminatory entrance requirements based on colour and parentage, the Harrison College of today is not the elitist school of the 1940's and '50s. The racial and socio-economic composition of the school has changed considerably, partly due to the abolition of school fees and the introduction of partial zoning. On the other hand it can be argued that when the school possessed a highly intact ethos or school culture, it inculcated values of social leadership marked by a sense of behavioural probity, commitment and social responsibilty- the old mantra that "those to whom much is given much is expected". With that weighty thought we present more of our graduates. If you wish to see an in depth profile of one of the following persons, you may cast your vote in the poll which is found at the end of this page.
